BBB warns against moving scams

Filed under: moving company, moving industry — admin @ 7:25 pm

WALLINGFORD — The Connecticut Better Business Bureau warns consumers about a minefield of potential problems with moving companies, based on thousands of complaints about everything from lateness to damages, incompetence, deceptive practices and bait-and-switch advertising.

Though there are many reputable relocation companies, consumers filed a stunning 10,000 complaints with Better Business Bureau nationwide in 2006.

According to Connecticut Better Business Bureau President Paulette Hotton, the key to avoiding problems with movers is homework, to prevent turning a routine move into a nightmare.

“It is important to remember that all of your most precious possessions are being entrusted to a third party, and you want to ensure that you are not left trying to clean-up problems with the mover months after you set up into your new dwelling.”

Be sure to ask when the mover starts the time clock.  If
it’s from the time the van leaves the company ware
house, rather than when the movers arrive at your
home, you’ll want to choose  mover near your home.

goods from your old to your new home, is typically
charged at double the hourly rate. a one hour drive, for
example, would be billed at two hours. this is to
compensate the movers for the time it takes them to get
back to starting point of the move.

Local Moves
For local moves, some people prefer to use a national
mover
with a recognized name and reputation,
rather than a smaller company they’ve heard nothing
about. However, the service you get from an indepedent
mover
can be just as good or even better than that of a
big name mover. The key is to ask the right questions when
you are making a selection, so you know what you are getting.

Moving yourself/Preperations To Make

Moving yourself/Preperations To Make
Make a Household inventory

This is necessary for insurance claims and it makes the job of estimating the amount of boxes you will need easier.Check the survival box list for items to have on hand. Pack any items not being used, as early as possible. Pick up a pamphlet for information on moving yourself. Many self help companies have free booklets, which will give you further suggestions to plan and organize your own move. Reserve a truck atleast one month in advance (earlier, if it is peak moving time). Reserve your equipment/dollies/blankets or pads. Check on your personal insurance policy, plus and truck rental company’s insurance, to ensure adequate coverage for yourself, your helpers and household effects. Engage some dependable help and ask them to reserve the moving dates.

Signing Your Moving Documents

The packaging and inventory slips pertaining to the move should be signed, noting “subject to final inspection” on the form above your signature. This way, if damages have occurred, you can claim them with less difficulty.  You usually have 90 days to make a claim, and in that time you must acquire valuation form from stores or furniture repair people on any damages.

Unpacking the Boxes

Filed under: Cleaning, Moving, moving company, moving tips, organizing, planning, unpacking — content @ 8:00 am

If you have professional movers, they will unpack some boxes if you desire. This is a tremendous help, especially with China and crystal.  Glasses and dish ware not frequently used can be washed later when time permits.  This will also speed the removal of the seemingly endless number of boxes, which can be removed by the moving company.

The Movers Are Coming

There is a way to survive.  ORGANIZE, ORGANIZE! That is the goal here.  Everything that you have done in the way of organization up until now will expedite the move and thereby keep the costs down.  Just as we did when we departed the old home, begin again with introductions and use the movers names often.  This is important.  Personalize your move in this way and you will have a good working relationship with all the movers for the day or days they are with you.  When the relationship is smooth, the whole moving process will function better.  Next take time to show all the movers your entire home, acquainting them with the room plots as you move on.
