If you’re one of the more than 40 million Americans who will move this year, whether you’re relocating down the street or across the country, it’s important to select a reputable moving company before the decision comes back to haunt you.
Incompetent and even deceptive movers are out there. Thousands of people each year fall prey to theft, extensive hidden costs, and bait-and-switch tactics. But, you can protect yourself by spending time researching your movers and asking the right questions.
“Selecting a mover shouldn’t be a 15-minute decision,” said Don Rankin, general manager of Graebel Northeastern Movers. “You’re looking for someone you can trust with your family heirlooms, the items you’ve spent years collecting and the belongings that make up a big part of your life.”

There is no need to think you are on your own on moving day, not if you do some smart planning in advance. Finding moving assist can be as easy as calling friends who would help you or finding a local moving company who does the you pack and load kind of move, while they do the driving.
Relocation help is actually just a call away to any reputable, licensed moving company. All you have to do is some research to see what kind of moving help you want, and what moving company you want to hire.
Moving help in fact can be as simple or as complete as you want it to be. For instance if you want the full service move – the one that literally does the whole thing for you, except pay the utility bills and clean your house – then make a list of what you want and start calling. They will pack and unpack for you, set things up (including appliances), drive your belongings there and in general just make your move as easy as 1-2-3.
Now, if that is the kind of service you do want, you will need to expect to be paying some serious dollars for this kind of moving help. Is it worth it? Depends on your point of view, but if you work odd hours, have young children and not enough time in a day to accomplish packing, yes, it would be worth it. Plus, if you happen to be moving for work reasons, chances are a full service move will be fully paid for by your employer. Check it out before booking a company, or stay with your company recommended relocation specialist.

Moving is one of those things that we all have to do in our lives. I know of no one who enjoys the process of having to pack up all of their belongings into boxes, haul them across town or across country, and then unpack the whole mess. But a little organization can go a long way to helping you keep your sanity during this crazy time.
Label every box with at least the room that it goes in and the basic contents of the box. If time permits, also have a fairly complete inventory of what is inside of the box.
This can be especially helpful if you are moving across country or if you are having movers move your items. The best way to do this is on your computer so that you can tape a copy to the box and also keep a copy with you. This way you can make sure that you definitely get all of your boxes from the moving company. If you do not yet have one, this is also a great way to create your inventory of the items in your home for home insurance purposes. So organizing this aspect of your move can also help you get other aspects of your home and life better organized as well.
As you put stuff into boxes, ask yourself if you really need this item in your life. If it is something that you don’t use, don’t like, never wear, ask yourself why you are packing it up and hauling it to a new home. If it isn’t being put to good use now, why take the effort to haul it to a new place where it will also not get used? Moving is a great time to get rid of things you don’t use and is a great first step in helping you get your new home organized.

Moving to a new home can be a stressful experience for many homeowners. But imagine how it can affect your pet. The Humane Society of the United States has a few tips for owners to help make Fido or Snowball feel more comfortable during the transition.
Before moving in, remove odors from previous pets. Moving into a home where other pets resided previously might encourage your pet to mark its territory.
On moving day, confine your pet to a safe, quiet place with favorite toys, familiar blankets, food and water. When the moving is complete, allow your pet to explore the home with you. Show your pet where you placed the favorite food bowl, bed, toys and litter box so they can become more familiar with their surroundings.
For more moving tips for pets and pet owners, visit the Humane Society Web site.

More Moving Tips To Keep Your Dog Happy
Many dog owners fail to understand that moving to a new house and uprooting all of your belongings can be extremely stressful on their pets. It doesn’t matter if you’re just moving across town, or across the entire nation, it is important to make sure that your dog’s well-being and his safety are part of your moving plans. Below are a few tips to assist you in cushioning your canine companion’s anxiety during the move:
1. If your dog is the type that gets overly anxious and sick during car trips, check into holistic therapies. For example, there is a product called Bach’s Rescue Remedy that helps calm your pet down during times of stress. All you do is rub it on his ears and feet.
2. Just like it is wise to keep your dog in a quiet, closed off room in the old house on moving day, the same rule should apply in the new house when you and the rest of your family arrive. Pick one room and provide enough food and water so that your dog can sit quietly without noticing all of the confusion around the new house.
3. When you arrive at the new home, unpack your dog’s belongings as soon as you get there. Be sure to keep the boxes that contain his stuff close by. These items would include hi bedding, his food and water bowls, and dog toys. This will help your dog adjust as quickly as possible by having familiar items around him while adjusting to the strange house.

These moving tips may include a few things you hadn’t thought of, or things you just need to be reminded of.
Get rid of things. Consider carefully what you need to keep. People spend hundreds of dollars to move things that will undoubtedly be thrown away some day. It’s not just a matter of the expense, but the hassle too. Moving time is the best time to get rid of the things you really don’t need.
Have a yard sale. It’s a good way to get rid of things, and you might even raise enough money to pay for the move.
Use lists. You will forget things, especially if you don’t have a list or two. Start with a list of things to do before the move. It may include getting school documents transferred, filling out change of address forms, returning borrowed books and movies, transferring prescriptions, getting maps, and arranging utility shut offs and start ups.
Make the moving company reservation a month ahead. You wouldn’t want to find that they are booked up on the date you need their services.
Pack early. It’s hard to say how long it will take until you are doing it. Start early to avoid running around looking for boxes at the last minute.

Many of the stresses of moving can be eliminated if you invest a little time and planning. Here are some suggestions most people have found helpful.
Things you can start doing 2-4 Weeks Before Moving Day
Get the necessary moving supplies and start packing the items that are rarely used. Call the local utility companies and schedule the transfer of utilities or disconnection dates.
Fill out a change of address form and give friends and family the new address as well as: schools, banks, doctors/dentists, phone company, loans, churches, credit cards, insurance, social security, attorney, accountant, etc. Prepare important documents such as birth certificates, financial documents, etc. and keep them in a safe place.
Schedule your new phone service at the new home. Confirm arrangements for your children and/or pets for moving day. Clean out the refrigerator and use all perishable items that cannot be moved. Transfer or discontinue the newspaper and magazine subscriptions. Create driving directions for the moving company. If you have a safe deposit box remember to remove all items and cancel the box. All oil and gas should be removed from equipment or tools such as lawn mowers. If you are traveling a long distance get the vehicle you will be driving serviced. Confirm the move time with the moving company or rental truck. Determine how the apartment or home you are leaving will be cleaned for the new occupant and make the arrangements.

The following are the tips and precautional measures to be considered while moving your home to a new place, which can help in shifting the belongings safely.
Easing the transition to new home: Packing begins with using the right boxes and packing them carefully. You should also label each box to show which room they belong to. This indicates in knowing where to start certainly.
Estimating the moving Cost: A relocated person is entitled to pay the moving cost and other related expenses. The moving cost and expenses depend on the transport arrangements. It is better to get estimation for the moving cost from the company so as to plan the necessary expenditure. Find the moving cost of different moving equipment.
Don’t skimp on boxes: Professional moving companies use only sturdy, reinforced cartons. If you are packing yourself beware, the boxes you can get are not nearly as strong as padded and as a result they can’t shield your valuables as well from harm in transit.
For delicate items: Use sheets, blankets, pillows and towels to separate pictures and other fragile objects from each other and the sides of the carton. Pack plates and glass objects vertically, rather than flat and stacked. Be sure to mark and point out the boxes to let your movers know about the delicate items packed in them. Label your boxes, especially the one containing sheets and towels, so that you can find everything you need at the first overnight in your new home.

International Moving Tips by Amy Nutt
Have you ever fantasized about moving across the world to experience another culture, or to study a foreign language? Many people have, but the thought of going through with such a move is a headache. Here are a few tips to make it easier for you to follow your heart and your dreams, and move wherever you want in the world.
Plan ahead. It doesn’t matter whether you are moving two blocks or two thousand miles, being organized ahead of time will save you a ton of time. Make sure everyone in your household is organized. One person unorganized can cause a headache for the whole family.
Let it go. Sometimes you just cannot move everything in your entire house. This is a great time to really do some deep cleaning and part with some of those possessions that you’ve been holding onto for far too long. Don’t feel bad for parting with some items of sentimental value; you can also unload a ton of weight in old papers and unnecessary bulk. Unfortunately you may also have to leave behind some of your larger furniture that is just impractical to move. Other items you may have to let go include paint, perishable foods, and things that can cause damage to your possessions if they leak during the move.

Wow. MOVING DAY has arrived. Hard to believe how time flies and now it’s time for your life’s possessions to be packed into boxes (if they aren’t already), loaded on a truck, and to head out for your new home. Kinda scary in some way, even though you have been planning for your Carlsbad relocation for months.
MOVING DAY can cause a great deal of anxiety. It’s very unsettling to see everything you own go into boxes after living with it for so long. If you are working with movers, which many folks do when they relocate, you will likely find it hard to stand by and watch as things are packed for you. Someone else is taking YOUR STUFF and putting in boxes, not you. That in itself is sorta freaky, especially if it is a new experience for you.
Someone who is dispassionate about your things (that’s not to say they aren’t careful but they just don’t have personal feelings about YOUR STUFF like you do) is wrapping it in paper and tossing it in those brown standard moving boxes without regard to what it means to you. Movers will pack just about anything – that trash can that still has trash in it? Yep. All the clothing in your dresser drawers? Yep. no matter what the mess, it will go into boxes.
It can be very disconcerting to walk into a favorite room where so much of your life took place and see nothing but stacks of boxes.

Yet another reason high taxes may result in less revenue for the state. Notable from the opinion:
Our friends on the left say Americans are willing to pay more taxes to get better government services, but their migration patterns reveal the opposite. Governors would be wise to heed these interstate migration trends as they try to cope with what may be one of the worst years in recent memory for state finances. The people who tend to be the most mobile in American society are the educated and motivated — in other words, the taxpaying class. Tax them too much, and you’ll soon find they aren’t there to tax at all.

So, you’re relocating. No matter: to the city, maybe to the country, to a luxary penthouse in the sky. No matter where you’re going, moving can be a pain. The boxes, the bubble wrap, the Styrofoam packing peanuts that spill all over the floor. Hassle an all, moving is sort of necessary….if you want to relocate, that is. But, with a few simple tips, moving just might be a little less of a pain in the box.
Pack like you mean it: Sure, no one likes to pack. It takes too long, it’s boring, and the boxes never seem quite big enough. For all these reasons, many people simply throw their stuff in boxes, putting breakable plates in with barbells. This manner might be quicker, but packing improperly can lead to things breaking and can also cause arduous unpacking. By taking some time, however, and even using bubble wrap around the snow globe Aunt Ezra gave you, your things will arrive safely and your unpacking won’t involve super gluing broken pieces back together.
Donate what you don’t need: Moving is a good time to get rid of the surplus filling up your attic. But, there is little sense in throwing things away that could be of use to someone else. You might be getting a new refrigerator, but your old one is still in good shape. Instead of putting it in the trash, give it to charity. Not only does this allow you to help others, but it also allows you to help yourself: donating to charity decreases your load, is tax deductible, and cleans out your place.
Hire a mover: So, you have a truck, a truck that has successfully moved stuff for one hundred and twelve of your closest friends. This may lead you to believe that you can move yourself quite easily. But – keep in mind – there is no such thing as an easy move. When you’re moving just a couch or a dresser, a pickup truck will suffice, but moving an entire houseful of items is much different. Instead of making eight hundred trips, and throwing out your back trying to lift the China cabinet, simply hire movers. It might cost a few bucks, but you’ll find it’s worth it in the end.
