Moving Tips: Items that Cannot be Transported

Filed under: Moving, crating, hazardous materials, moving tips, packing, planning — content @ 8:00 am

Another article on shipping and moving
During the moving process, you might be worried about all the items you must pack before the big day. In all the chaos, don’t forget about the items you cannot take with you. Due to federal and international regulations, there are some items that are considered dangerous when in transport, whether by truck, airplane or ship. Here are some products and items to dispose of while packing.
Hazardous Materials
If a product is flammable, poisonous, explosive or corrosive, it will not be accepted by the mover. These might include matches, gasoline or machinery with gasoline in it, propane cylinders, paint or paint thinner, nail polish remover, automotive chemicals, oxygen tanks or bottles and fireworks. Firearms and non-perishable foods are also not allowed.

8 Tips On How To Make Your Relocation Smoother

Whether you are moving across the country or just across town, it might be wise to consider a moving truck rental to get your belongings from place to place. Renting a moving truck can prove to be quit cost effective when compared to multiple trips back and forth with a vehicle you already own. 1- Shop around and inquire about prices and specials as well as other options that may be offered to you when you rent a moving truck. Look for a company that has high standards for their trucks as well as their towing equipment, this may be more expensive, but worth it in the long run. Ask if the company offers unlimited mileage, if not, find out how much extra miles will cost you.

The Movers Are Coming

There is a way to survive.  ORGANIZE, ORGANIZE! That is the goal here.  Everything that you have done in the way of organization up until now will expedite the move and thereby keep the costs down.  Just as we did when we departed the old home, begin again with introductions and use the movers names often.  This is important.  Personalize your move in this way and you will have a good working relationship with all the movers for the day or days they are with you.  When the relationship is smooth, the whole moving process will function better.  Next take time to show all the movers your entire home, acquainting them with the room plots as you move on.

Departure Day

You have planned the move as much as you can.  Now it is a matter of rechecking your organization, the survival boxes, your file for important papers and the “DO NOT PACK” signs to be sure everything is ready. When the movers arrive, begin with introductions, and proceed to escort them through your house, acquainting them with the home and all your messages. Mention travel times and schedules at the outset. You may have a deadline for your place of lodging after the house is empty, and the movers may have a schedule to meet too.  It is important to take this time to be sure you and the movers have a clear understanding of what must be accomplished and in what time frame.  Never assume anything in life (and especially a move).

Appliance Preperation/Moving Tips

Filed under: Cleaning, crating, electronic, moving tips, organizing, packing, planning — content @ 8:00 am

The following tips remind you of everyday items that always need care in a move. If you have other equipment in your home or apartment, check the equipment manuals for service and care advice.

  1. Clean and defrost the refrigerator.  Take a small box of baking soda, cut the box open and wrap the box with a thin piece of cloth.  Store this in the refrigerator to deter odors for several months.  An alternative method is to put charcoal in a loose cloth.  Wipe the whole inside of the refrigerator with the vinegar  to avoid mildew buildup.
  2. Clean the oven and range.
  3. Drain the washing machine well.
  4. Clean the dishwasher and remove all leftover soap.
  5. Grind a lemon (cut into pieces) into your garbage disposal to eliminate odors.
  6. Dry the interiors of all your appliances.

Equipment such as stereo equipment should be packed according to the directions in the manuals, and preferably in their own cartons.  Check your storage areas for these boxes before the movers arrive.

Pictures Serve as a Reference

Filed under: Cleaning, Moving, Storage, crating, furniture, moving tips, organizing, packing, planning — content @ 8:00 am

If your household goods are going into storage or will in some way be unavailable to you it’s a good idea to take pictures of your furniture, bedspreads, lamps, area carpets or anything you want to shop for drapes, blinds carpeting or paint before you move in the new home, and it’s very helpful to have these colors available in snapshots rather than trusting them to memory.

Organizing Rooms

Label anything not to be packed, you can even store items  in the trunk of your automobile so these do not inadvertently get put into cartons. Despite labeling, things can go awry.  During an early move, we have a growing pile of equipment to take with us, including clean diapers, baby food, our own clothes and some things to be laundered., including a bag of soiled diapers, all labeled with a big sign “DO NOT PACK.”  You guessed t.  They packed the whole thing.  By the time we arrived at our new destination, the soiled diapers were really ripe, to say the least.  although the diapers we used were 27 years ago are no longer a problem, the point here is that it is very important to be aware of the moving process at all times.   This is why you need assistance from family or friends on this day.  Mistakes can happen at this hectic time.

Organizing Rooms-Labeling for Packing

Organize your small and easily transportable furniture before the moving company personnel arrive. it may seem trivial to rearrange pieces so soon but remember what it does to save valuable time when moving into a new home.  For one thing, there are always four to five ( or perhaps more) people asking you where to place all the items on moving day.

Furniture/Unusually Large Pieces of Furniture

Filed under: Moving, Storage, crating, furniture, moving tips, organizing, packing, planning — content @ 8:00 am

Unusually large pieces of furniture, such as a baby grand piano, may require and extra step in this process. In addition to drawing the piece of furniture to scale for your room plot, you can cut a pattern from an old bed sheet for it .  Lay the sheet on the furniture and cut around the edge to give you the pattern.  You can easily carry the cutout sheet with you as the pattern.  You can easily carry the cutout sheet with as you do your house shopping and lay the fabric on the floor of any home you are considering.  In this way you will have a visual conception of the space the piece will consume.

Furniture/Measuring To scale

Filed under: Cleaning, Moving, crating, furniture, moving tips, organizing, packing, planning — content @ 8:00 am

Measuring your furniture is an extremely useful and practical tool for a move. I suggest that anyone looking for a house perform this exercise before beginning the house search.  These measurements will provide a more realistic idea of the space required for your furniture.  Even though this may sound like a lot of unnecessary work, I promise you it is well worth the effort.

Childrens Survival Boxes

Filed under: Cleaning, Moving, crating, moving tips, organizing, packing, planning — content @ 8:00 am

Making a survival box is good for the children, as long as you believe they are old enough to handle the situation. If your youngsters can write, they can make a list of anything they will need in the new home before the household goods arrive.  This could include some of their treasures to make them feel at home.

Use it or Lose it

Some people have trouble getting rid of things because they worry they may need or want these things someday. One way to reduce the stress of deciding what you can throw out is to put the items in a question into a box and set the box aside. After a week or two, pull the box out and take a look at each of the items. Did you need it or miss it? Will you ever need it? Or is it time to part company?

Getting Started

The greatest number of people who relocate do so between May and October. If you are planning a move during this time, you should reserve dates and equipment as soon as possible.  This applies to moving with professional mover or moving on your own with rental equipment.

Use it or lose it 2

If you’re a saver and you haven’t pared down in a while, start this process early. Don’t wait till the last couple of weeks before the move when you’ll be busy with so many other things you won’t be able to spare the time.  Sure, a professional organizer would probably be able to whip through your house in a couple of days; but it’s different when everything belongs to you.  These are more than inanimate objects- they represent memories as well.  Give yourself time to sort through them.  Invite a friend in to help you if you need an impartial eye.
