Moving Information – Money Saving Tips

Moving can be a costly and stressful experience. The moving tips below can help you save money when hiring a moving company as well as make your move go more smoothly.

1.) Get rid of items that you no longer use and have been storing for a long period of time, especially if the items bulky. Consider having a garage sale sell structured insurance settlements donating these items. Often the cost of packing and moving these items is greater than their value. If you have furniture that is quite old and in poor condition, it may make more sense to apply the money you save by not moving these items towards the purchase of new furniture.

Signing Your Moving Documents

The packaging and inventory slips pertaining to the move should be signed, noting “subject to final inspection” on the form above your signature. This way, if damages have occurred, you can claim them with less difficulty.  You usually have 90 days to make a claim, and in that time you must acquire valuation form from stores or furniture repair people on any damages.

Pictures Serve as a Reference

If your household goods are going into storage or will in some way be unavailable to you it’s a good idea to take pictures of your furniture, bedspreads, lamps, area carpets or anything you want to shop for drapes, blinds carpeting or paint before you move in the new home, and it’s very helpful to have these colors available in snapshots rather than trusting them to memory.

Organizing Rooms

Filed under: Cleaning, Moving, furniture, moving tips, organizing, packing, planning — content @ 8:00 am

Make last minute notes on what you need from each room. If you desire to pack some articles yourself, the moving company will deliver boxes ahead of time if your request it.  I recommend packing anything you may need immediately, such as personnel clothing, bedding or bath towels.  You can then more the boxes yourself for easy reference.

Organizing Rooms-Labeling for Packing

Organize your small and easily transportable furniture before the moving company personnel arrive. it may seem trivial to rearrange pieces so soon but remember what it does to save valuable time when moving into a new home.  For one thing, there are always four to five ( or perhaps more) people asking you where to place all the items on moving day.

Room Plots

Filed under: Moving, furniture, moving tips, organizing, packing, planning — content @ 8:00 am

Purchase some graph paper and draw your rooms to size. This idea given with the new home in mind; however, you can use it anytime you want to rearrange your furniture.  Measure your rooms and draw them on graph paper, allowing each square to equal one foot.  As you make the room plot, note the placement of the windows and doors.

Furniture/Unusually Large Pieces of Furniture

Filed under: Moving, Storage, crating, furniture, moving tips, organizing, packing, planning — content @ 8:00 am

Unusually large pieces of furniture, such as a baby grand piano, may require and extra step in this process. In addition to drawing the piece of furniture to scale for your room plot, you can cut a pattern from an old bed sheet for it .  Lay the sheet on the furniture and cut around the edge to give you the pattern.  You can easily carry the cutout sheet with you as the pattern.  You can easily carry the cutout sheet with as you do your house shopping and lay the fabric on the floor of any home you are considering.  In this way you will have a visual conception of the space the piece will consume.

Furniture/Drawing Furniture To Scale

Filed under: Moving, family, furniture, moving tips, organizing, packing, planning — content @ 8:00 am

The next step takes place preferably when all little children are tucked into bed for the night. Use some type of sturdy paper or three-by five-inch cards and draw small squares to resemble each piece of furniture. Use a scale of one-quarter inch equals one foot for the width and depth, writing height on the paper piece in case you need to refer to it later. Identify the pieces, such as “Tom’s desk” or “Sally’s dresser” cut theses squares and place them into envelopes labeled appropriately, such as “family room,” “living room” or “Tom’s room.”

Room Plots 3

Filed under: Moving, Storage, furniture, moving tips, organizing, packing, planning — content @ 8:00 am

Don’t  neglect this exercise.  You may be tempted to put this off because it takes a fair amount of time. But on moving day, you will be amazed at how much time and energy you saved.  By having furniture drawn on a room plan and having the plan in an appropriate room, your move will proceed with a much greater speed and ease. ( it also helps to tape a number or name to each room door.)  When every thing’s in place, save these room plots, just as you did the furniture pieces.  If you want to rearrange the room later, you’ll be happy you saved them.  And if you ever move again you will be glad you have them.

Furniture/Measuring To scale

Filed under: Cleaning, Moving, crating, furniture, moving tips, organizing, packing, planning — content @ 8:00 am

Measuring your furniture is an extremely useful and practical tool for a move. I suggest that anyone looking for a house perform this exercise before beginning the house search.  These measurements will provide a more realistic idea of the space required for your furniture.  Even though this may sound like a lot of unnecessary work, I promise you it is well worth the effort.

Moving (Oh, my aching back) Your Home

I have to move next week. Moving is a job no one can love. No one likes change, and changing your home can do personal, self-inflicted, violence to your sense of place. To add insult to injury, moving as a senior citizen brings with it a number of added burdens. Typically, you are -

  • learning of a whole raft of tasks that must be completed by a firm deadline,
  • forced to part with some treasures that are either too heavy or fragile to move sensibly,
  • required to dispose of some items, e.g. plants and paints, that movers don’t handle,
  • faced with the need to find a “new home” for furniture and accumulated “stuff” that simply will not fit into your new surroundings,
  • picking out a responsible mover from a fairly large group of suppliers,
  • packing cartons yourself, possibly with the assistance of friends, or paying the professional movers to do the job, and
  • paying out of your own pocket.

Moving should be simple as possible, with no hidden costs or surprises

As you start you move things start to move fast and many of your items leave the house. During the days of the move ,if you do not own a car rent one so you will be able to transport your expensive and confidential property such as jewelry…. This way everything is safe, and within your reach at any given time. The renting of the car splits into three days: 1) On the first day make sure that all of your private and important belongings are with you.  Drive around between your new apartment and your old apartment to make sure that average is OK and is running smoothly. 2) On the second day, drive around between the houses but this time make sure that all of the moved items in the new apartment are placed in their spot according to what you want.

Tips for Dealing with Good and Bad Movers

Are you in the process of planning to move? As a result, are you struggling to get reliable movers online to assist you in your move? If you have made the purchase of a new Tampa home, there are some pointers that you need to keep in mind when it comes to hiring and then dealing with a good (or a bad) Tampa moving company. One of the downsides to moving is the fact that you run the risk of suffering damages to your personal property. There are steps that you can — really, must — take in order to protect yourself should you end up having some of your property damaged as the result of the negligence of movers that you hire. First of all, prior to engaging the movers, prior to the movers showing up and going to work, you should photograph (or, better yet, video tape) your valuable possessions. By photographing or video taping these items — with a date stamp on the images — you will have the evidentiary proof necessary to demonstrate clearly the actual condition of your possessions before a move.

Tips for a Smoother Move

Get rid of items you don’t need or haven’t used in a year before movers arrive. Get rid of hazardous materials. Do not move jewelry, money, coin collections, etc. Keep these items in your possession. Confirm dates and services to be performed with your move coordinator. Notify carrier as soon as you know dates, preferably 2-3 weeks prior to move. Make a list of items in offsite storage/office and lab locations. List boxes as well as furniture and garage items. Make a list from attic, crawl spaces, closets and any other storage areas not readily available for viewing by the moving consultant. Make a list of items that will need special handling. This includes glass table tops, marble tops, taxidermy and heavy mirrors or pictures that may need wood crating. Check the access for loading and unloading at each stop for the move. Can an 18-wheel tractor-trailer moving van legally and logistically park within 75 feet of your front door? If it cannot, long carry and perhaps even shuttle charges (loading and unloading a smaller truck) will be incurred. Are there elevators or stairs? These can add additional costs at both origin and destination. Do not have the phone disconnected at origin until after the house is empty. Communication is important. Provide phone numbers at destination including motel, new home, cell phone, and work.
